Cacao & Orange Crunch Balls

It's every man for himself when it comes these delicious morsels. Every time I make a batch, they're gone within 48 hours. Just this morning, I opened the box to find a single, lone crunch ball left! So I highly recommend double-batching this recipe –because believe you me, they are highly addictive, and should come with a warning...

Like most of my recipes, adaptability is a key feature. Here, I've used a blend of nuts and seeds for added nutritional value, but feel free to use whatever you have to hand. I've also chosen to use raw cacao powder, because it has increased nutritional value and is less processed – but regular cocoa powder will taste equally delicious.

Orange, however, is essential. The nutrients found in the zest actually outweigh the goodness in the flesh, so I add it to as many meals as I can, from dressings and smoothies to baked goods.

The use of cacao nibs gives the balls extra nutrients and crunch. Relatively inexpensive and readily available, these tiny marvels also contain compounds that can increase serotonin and dopamine levels in the brain, so I highly recommend including them!

I've also added some protein powder – but again, whether you follow my lead or not is entirely up to you...

SERVES:
approx 24 balls

Ingredients

⅓ cup raw almonds

⅓ cup pumpkin seeds

⅓ cup sunflower seeds

10 medjool dates

¼ cup cacao nibs

3 tbsp cacao or cocoa powder

Zest of 1 orange

3 tbsp protein powder – I used Vanilla Super Blend from Form

1 tsp ground cinnamon

6 cardamom pods, seeds removed and ground, or ready-ground seeds (optional)

½ tsp sea or Himalayan salt

Juice of ½ orange

Instructions

  1. Add all the ingredients, apart from the orange juice, to a food processor, and blitz for a couple of minutes to combine.
  2. With the processor still running, add the orange juice bit by bit, until the dough clumps into a ball.
  3. Roll the mixture into about 24 walnut-sized balls. At this stage, you can dust them with extra cacao powder if you like.
  4. Store your crunch balls in an airtight container in the fridge. They'll last a good week – although I promise they'll be gone in days!
